pygmy cypress no. 4
Cupressus pygmaea
Height 24" Width 32"
The Lone Cypress off the coast of Carmel, California in Point Lobos State Park is an iconic tree isolated to an island of rock floating in the abyss of the Pacific. This tree receives all of nature's wrath, as well as all of nature's glory. To contrast the devastation of being the first point of contact when oncoming storms crash into the California coast with the divinity of Point Lobos on a calm sunny day is to touch the polarities of nature at its worst and nature at its very finest.
This composition the aesthetic this juxtaposition creates in the ancient Monterrey Cypress of Point Lobos. Perched so high above the vessel, the stone promontory hints at the loneliness a tree in isolation can convey.
