Japanese Maple no. 1
Acer palmatum
Height 28" Width 30"
This Japanese Maple may be one of the most naturally elegant and powerful examples we’ve encountered—whether in Japan, North America, or beyond. The cultivar is clearly a specialty, though its exact identity remains unknown.
The tree arrived at Mirai through the hands of a student stepping away from bonsai. It came unexpectedly—but its presence was undeniable. There was something in its posture and structure that immediately drew us in.
Once in our care, we began applying the full breadth of Japanese Maple refinement: techniques focused on balancing energy, increasing interior growth, and building fine ramification. The tree responded with remarkable vitality.
A critical step in its development came through a bold repot. We restructured the root system, replaced the soil medium, and reset the foundation. What could have been a setback for a less resilient tree became an opportunity. The response was overwhelmingly positive—vigorous growth, strong recovery, and a renewed sense of clarity in its design.
Now housed in a refined Nao Tokutake container, this Maple stands poised for a future of continued refinement. Its elegance, strength, and soft power mark it as a specimen that will only improve with time.
