douglas fir no. 13
Pseudotsuga menziesii 'Glauca'
Height 34" Width 52"
This Douglas Fir began its life on the harsh slopes of the Rocky Mountains, enduring centuries of wind, snow, and searing sun. Estimated to be between 250 and 500 years old, it grew slowly, twisting and gnarling in response to an unforgiving alpine environment. Each scar, each curve in its trunk tells a story of survival and adaptation in a landscape where only the resilient endure.
Collected by Todd Schlafer, this tree was entrusted to the artistry of modern bonsai design, where its raw, rugged beauty was honored rather than tamed. Its form now rests in a hand-crafted container by Tom Benda, whose subtle artistry complements the tree’s ancient essence.
The design philosophy for this composition is harmonious—a balance between raw age and refined artistry. Its weathered deadwood and soft green canopy create a dialogue between endurance and renewal, strength and grace.
