The Craftsmanship Behind Our Canvas Bonsai Tool Bags
In a world of rapid production and throwaway goods, something remarkable happens when you slow down—and make something well. When you choose quality materials. When you adapt with purpose. When you design for how something will truly be used, not just how it will look on a shelf.
Our collaboration with Beckel Canvas, a local Oregon company making handcrafted canvas bags and tents for over half a century, is about exactly that. It’s about honoring materials. Supporting artisans. And creating products that stand the test of time—just like the trees we work with.
We first came across Beckel Canvas when a friend gave us one of their bags. From the moment we held it, we could feel the quality—sturdy, well-made, and built to last. Later, visiting their workshop in Milwaukee, Oregon only deepened our respect for the craftsmanship and care behind every product.
We believe in things made by hand. We believe in things made to last. And we believe in partnering with people who care.

The Hands Behind the Craft: Brandy Lamb and Team
Brandy Lamb, the current owner of Beckel Canvas, shares those values deeply. He leads a small, skilled team of makers who put integrity into every stitch. Their workshop is filled with old industrial sewing machines, spools of heavy-duty thread, rolls of raw canvas, and the hum of real craftsmanship in action.

When we approached Beckel Canvas about creating tool bags for Mirai, we didn’t want something generic. We wanted something intentional—a product that felt like an extension of our philosophy, our trees, and our workspace.
We began with a couple of Beckel’s standard silhouettes, bags that already had the bones of what we were looking for. Then, together with Brandy and team, we refined them.
Their standard Necessary Bag became slightly larger, with improved depth and interior space—perfect for organizing shears, concave cutters, and pliers with ease. Their Briefcase Bag, became our go-to for wire storage, which received added interior pockets, allowing different gauges to stay separate, accessible, and untangled. Every adjustment came from real-world use—what bonsai practitioners actually need in the field, in the studio, and in the garden.
Canvas is one of those rare materials that feels almost alive. It breathes. It softens over time. It holds the marks of its use—each crease and smudge telling a story.
It’s also incredibly durable. We’ve heard stories of people calling Beckel after 15 or even 20 years, asking if a beloved bag can be repaired. More often than not, it can. That’s the kind of legacy we love.

Canvas doesn’t hide behind trends. It just works—again and again. And when paired with thoughtful design and expert construction, it becomes something that moves with you through your life and practice.
Watching the Beckel team at work is like watching a bonsai artist at the bench. There’s no rush—only rhythm. Each panel is cut with precision. Each seam is placed with care. The tools of their trade are weathered, worn, and well-loved—just like ours.
The end result is not a mass-produced accessory. It’s a companion. A piece of functional art, sewn slowly and with purpose. Something you’ll use for decades. Something that gets better with age.
There’s something beautiful about working with your hands. About making a product that meets someone else's needs in a real and lasting way. That’s what this collaboration is about.

At Mirai, we view bonsai as an art form—one grounded in horticulture, but expressed through creativity, patience, and precision. Working with Beckel, we saw that same spirit in a different medium.
Canvas and thread instead of tree and wire.
A Beckel bag, like a bonsai tree, is shaped over time. Designed to meet real needs. Crafted not just to function—but to endure. In every stitch is a philosophy we believe in: do it well, or not at all.

These bags are more than storage. They’re symbols of what’s possible when care and craftsmanship lead the way. And we couldn’t be more proud to support another small Oregon business that’s committed to making things the right way.
Whether you’re a professional bonsai artist or a passionate enthusiast, these bags are designed to support your process—with strength, intention, and integrity.
